South Styria

Millions of years ago, large parts of Styria were under water. Only a few mountain peaks rose above the prehistoric sea. The Kitzeck Mountain, which boasts most of our vineyards on breathtakingly steep slopes, belongs to some of the oldest geological formations. Here, the vines thrive on paleozoic schist in optimum southern exposures. It is exactly these special soils which, along with the matching grape varieties, impart that unique and distinctive character to the wines. South Styria is influenced by Mediterranean climate. The interplay of mild weather conditions induced by the southern location with cool breezes coming in from the Alps after sunset produces large temperature differences between day and night. This factor is crucial to the development of intense aromas and flavors in the grapes. Besides, the altitude of the Sausal vineyards provides good wind circulation, which in turn accelerates the nightly cooling process. The air draft also helps the grapes dry up quickly after rainfalls so as to avoid problems in the vineyards.
The top sites of the House of Wohlmuth rank among Styria?s best vineyards also from a historical view. The lordship of Seckau claimed one third of the wine-tithe from the premium parcels of the Sausal, they explicitly demanded wines sourced from the Altenberg, Edelschuh and Steinriegel, until well into the 19th century. Until today, nothing has changed with the qualitative rating of these single-vineyard sites. Their significance as Styrian ?grand crus? was further enhanced by great expenditures and enormous diligence.
